About the Role
We are accepting applications for board of director roles on a rolling basis, and acceptance to our board is determined by current directors in accordance with our organization's bylaws.
At this time, there are no paid staff positions at Sunshine Creative Reuse and the organization is run entirely by a working volunteer board and volunteers. Joining a working board of directors is an investment of time and heart, since the board will be responsible for coordinating all operations and delivery of programs and services. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Guiding operational and strategic direction for the organization in alignment with our mission
- Financial planning & development, including review, forecasting, and budgeting.
- Representing Sunshine Creative Reuse at events within the community including: classes/workshops, festivals, pop-up markets, info tables, donation drives, etc.
- Engaging with the community and ensuring a wide variety stakeholder perspectives (e.g., the environment, local community, customers, partners, donors, etc.) are considered in our decision-making process.
- Delivering our programs and services to the community (e.g., classes/workshops, festivals, pop-up markets, donation drives, student and teacher programs)
A few upcoming projects that you would have the opportunity to work on in the next 1-2 years include:
- Attending pop-up markets and tabling events to share information about the organization and selling items to generate revenue for the organization.
- Attending classes and workshops (whether you are there to instruct, organize, observe, or create with us!)
- Applying for 501(c)(3) tax exemption status with the IRS.
- Establishing community partnerships and refining our programs and services offered (there are SO many wonderful ideas and we cannot do them all - help us stay focused on what matters most!)
- Identifying a brick & mortar location to open a retail art supply thrift store and community makerspace
- Collecting, sorting, and organizing donations
- Planning fundraiser events and activities to generate income for the organization
Requirements
The following are not required, but are characteristics that we hope to see represented in our board of directors:
Passion and/or interest in the arts (especially our local arts community), nonprofit leadership, and sustainability/creative reuse.
Excitement about our mission to inspire creativity and increase access to the arts through creative reuse.
Experience working or volunteering in any of the following: retail industry, nonprofit organizations or social enterprises, education, community engagement/organizing, sustainability, small business, the arts (visual, performing, or other).
The following are requirements of all board members:
Ability to commit to a 1-2 year term (this is flexible in order to meet the needs of a growing organization, but shall be no less than 1 year).
Availability to attend monthly meetings either virtually or in person, and attend at least 1 in-person annual meeting. Ideally, all board members are local and can meet for in-person meetings the majority of the time.
Availability to work on special projects and attend events between meetings
About the Company
Sunshine Creative reuse is on a mission to inspire creativity and increase access to the arts through creative reuse. We do this by offering art supplies and art classes and events to our local community in Transylvania County and surrounding areas within Western North Carolina.
Creative reuse is the process of taking existing materials (art supplies or not) and turning it into something new. This offers community members an opportunity to donate unwanted supplies, shop affordable supplies through our pop-up thrift store, and participate in classes using upcycled and reused materials. This makes participating in the arts more affordable and sustainable.
